Our inventory of used cars in Maryland has all undergone rigorous multi-point inspections. Nevertheless, the cars are no longer new. What can you do on your end to prolong the car’s life and ensure continued reliable performance?
Check the Tires
Once a month and first thing in the morning when the tires are still cold, measure the PSI using a digital tire gauge. The PSI should always be within 5 PSI of the recommended PSI; this information can be found on the driver’s side of the doorjamb. Frequently driving with under-inflated tires can cause damage to associated components, such as the ball bearings and axle.
Check the Oil
Most modern Toyota models can go for around 7,500 miles between oil changes under normal driving conditions. This translates to roughly every six months for the average driver that commutes daily. However, vehicles with turbocharged or diesel engines may require more frequent changes. You’ll also need an oil change more often if you frequently use your car for short trips, drive under dusty conditions, or tow heavy equipment.
Check the Air Filter
Remove the air filter and hold it up against a light source. If the light doesn’t penetrate through, then the filter is due for a replacement. Some filters, though, can be washed and reused.
Wash the Car
Wash the car every one to two weeks. While washing has little bearing on a car’s performance, factors like dust, rain, and sunlight can erode the paint and finish. In turn, this can affect the car’s value.
If you purchase a pre-owned vehicle at Heritage Toyota Catonsville, then the above tips along with professional maintenance will prolong the car’s life. These tips are applicable to all models, including off-roaders like the Toyota RAV4.
