No matter how much automotive technology improves, there will never be such a thing as a maintenance-free car. All technology wears with continued use.
The question is how often you should have your vehicle serviced by a professional. Is there a "Toyota service near me" for reliable vehicle diagnosing?
Vehicle Servicing Frequency
As a general rule of thumb, we suggest bringing your car to a dealership once every year, or every 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. However, this assumes you commute under normal driving conditions.
So, what are normal driving conditions? It’s the opposite of severe driving conditions. Let’s define the latter. Ask yourself the following:
- Do you frequently commute in stop-and-go traffic?
- Do you seldom drive on the freeway, if ever?
- Do you frequently commute for short distances, under five miles per trip?
- Do you often use your vehicle for off-roading?
If any of these apply to your driving habits, you may drive under severe conditions. In this case, how often do you need vehicle servicing? This really comes down to model type and year.
Refer to your vehicle user manual for the most optimal maintenance interval schedule. Some models require servicing as frequently as every 3,000 miles under severe driving conditions.
Oil Change Intervals
On the subject of car maintenance, what about oil change frequency? If you don’t get this done during the general maintenance, change the oil every 5,000 to 7,000 miles, or the figure specified in the user manual.
Contrary to popular belief, the 3,000-mile rule does not apply to modern vehicles. It is something you should consider, though, if your car is more than 20-years-old.
