The tires are the only part of the car that makes physical contact with the road. As such, they’re subject to daily wear and tear. If you’ve had your tires for a while and they’re feeling (or looking) a little worse for wear, you may be wondering if you need Toyota tire repairs, or if your tires are due for a replacement — we can help.

When to Repair Tires

There are actually few instances that tires are repairable: for instance, when it has sustained a puncture that’s no more than a quarter of an inch deep, and the damage is on the treads. This is a relatively minor puncture that can be fixed with a patch or plug. Minor damage to the valve stem may also be repairable, and it’s necessary to prevent air leaks.

Remember: a repair is only a temporary fix, as it will only prevent air from escaping the resulting hole. It won’t restore the tire’s structural strength. All tires need to be replaced eventually.

When to Replace Tires

Other than the above scenarios, tires need to be replaced under most other situations. This includes punctures exceeding a quarter of an inch and/or if the puncture is on the sidewall. Visible cuts also require replacement, as gashes may damage the steel cords beneath the rubber.

Other instances that warrant a tire replacement include:

  • Tread separation
  • Bulges or bubbling in the tire sidewall
  • Extensive cracking in the sidewall
  • Collision resulting in the tire being separated from the rim
