The 2020 Toyota Highlander marks the beginning of the fourth-generation for the midsize SUV. As such, consumers can expect key changes, all the while retaining the refined handling it’s historically known for.

For starters, the SUV is built on an entirely new platform for improved agility and ride quality. The new platform also increases total vehicle length by 2.4-inches. With this comes additional cargo space and legroom for third-row passengers.

For its infotainment system, expect both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay enhanced with Amazon Alexa and Wave Capability. The touchscreen ranges from the standard eight inches to 12 inches depending on the trim line.

The Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 also comes standard in all trims. The safety suite includes lane keeping assist and automatic emergency braking. If you purchase the hybrid version of the Toyota Highlander, a new function optimizes battery charging. It achieves this by automatically changing power output during certain actions, such as during deceleration or ascending uphill.

Buyers will also have the option of an all-wheel-drive variant. With this selection comes a new base system that equally splits torque among the front and rear wheels. Upper trims for all-wheel-drive also comes with multiple traction modes, a nice addition for the weekend off-roader.

Edmunds released an in-depth report of the 2020 Toyota Highlander. The review outlined the changes in the new generation model, and the reviewer was optimistic about the SUV delivering a “smoother ride.”

The 2020 model isn’t out yet, but you can see the current 2019 Toyota Highlander at Heritage Toyota Catonsville. However, expect the former to be released by December, with the hybrid variant following suit in February the following year. Our Toyota protection plans in Baltimore, MD include a number of protection options to ensure you have financial backing in the event of a collision or other vehicle mishap.
