How to Safely Drive Your Toyota Car During Winter

We’ve already gotten our fair share of cold weather, and before long, there is a good chance that the roads will be covered in snow and ice. Here at Heritage Toyota Catonsville, our dealers are happy to share their tips on how to safely drive in winter conditions.

Accelerate and brake slowly: When the roads are covered in snow, everything takes longer. Give yourself plenty of time when driving in inclement conditions. When you need to accelerate, apply the gas slowly in order to regain traction and avoid skids. When it becomes time to stop for a stoplight, apply your brakes earlier than you otherwise would have, because it takes longer to slow down on icy roads.

Do not power up hills: Whether you are driving a 2019 Toyota RAV4 or different Toyota vehicle, it it important to take it easy when ascending a hill. Applying extra gas when going up a hill just starts your wheels spinning and can cause you to spin out. Instead, try to get some inertia going before you reach the hill and let that inertia carry you to the top. When you reach the top, slow down and cruise down the hill as slowly as possible.

Increase your following distance: On dry pavement, the normal advice is to leave three to four seconds of space between your car and the car in front of you. To account for longer stopping times in snow, this distance should be increased to eight to 10 seconds.
